Rotary indexing tables are a tried-and-tested solution when several assembly, inspection or machining steps need to be reliably linked together within a confined space. They enable short cycle times, a clear process structure and a compact design.
Westphal Mechanik develops rotary indexing table systems for industrial applications where precision, repeatability and process reliability are crucial. The systems are customised to suit specific components, process steps, cycle times and quality requirements.
Depending on the task at hand, we integrate various technologies into a compact, turnkey system – for example, feeding, parts handling, robotics, screwdriving, inspection, weighing, labelling, camera inspection, packaging or integration with higher-level quality assurance systems.
We also take new transport technologies into account in our development work. We are currently implementing our first application using planar motors. This technology enables particularly flexible and rapid component transport whilst maintaining a very compact design.
Rotary indexing table for micro-gas generators
A rotary indexing table system is being developed for the assembly and filling of micro-gas generators, offering a high level of process reliability and integrated quality control..
Typical characteristics include:
- two rotary tables, each with 12 stations
- filling the MGGs with pyrotechnic propellant
- monitoring of the propellant quantity via multiple, high-precision weighing operations
- part handling between the tables and for packaging using 4 SCARA robots
- automatic, flexibly configurable and milled part feed system
- 4 cameras
- integration with the customer’s overarching quality assurance system

Rotary indexing table for ball-joint test stations
For spherical pin test stations, we combine testing, machining, preservation and packaging processes into a compact rotary indexing table solution.
Typical process steps include:
- crack testing using eddy current methods
- thread rolling
- preservation
- automatic packaging
- automatic KLT handling
Rotary indexing table for haptic and illumination testing
For circuits and control elements, we manufacture rotary indexing tables with integrated testing processes. These combine optical, electrical and mechanical tests.
Typical characteristics include:
- 4-station rotary indexing table
- visual inspection of the component using a camera
- haptic test using a torque sensor
- force/displacement-monitored push-button test mounted on a 6-axis robot
- real-time analysis of electrical signals, torque and displacement curves
- test programme and display of torque/displacement curves
- process database (SQL Server)

Precision rotary indexing table solutions with interchangeable workpiece carriers and automated removal are being developed for the machining and assembly of cockpit cross members.
